Thai Cookery

Prior to our trip we consulted with friends, family and got a lot of great tips from everyone. One piece of advice: take on a role each day. I.e. become a photographer, a writer, etc. (thanks Brad for this suggestion.)

Today our "job" including putting on our chef's hat and taking over a Thai kitchen. I was truly imagining an Anthony Bourdain kind of experience where we are floating along the river staring at people and smoking a lot of cigarettes. Unlike Mr. Bourdain I have minimal cooking skills and I don't like to smoke. Fortunately for me, today's adventures took us elsewhere.

We decided to take a cooking class at the Chiang Mai Thai Cookery School. Today's lesson: Shopping at the Market. During the course today, we were able to learn about the amazing fresh produce that appears most commonly in Thai dishes. We were given a kind of monopoly money post-it note with the ingredients our meals required and sent out on a mission to collect them. Then we went back to the chef's house and were given a brief "how to" demonstration, followed by a try it yourself approach. Finding our stations we chopped, stirred, sauteed, and wok-ed (all under the careful guidance of the pro's). Yummy ... curry, phad siewe, bananas in coconut milk.. the list goes on. Here are a few pictures from our cooking and eating experiences thus far. I don't think we'll ever be hungry again.
